Durian season is here, and we are collecting empty durian shells to feed our Black Soldier Fly larvae. Our collaborator De Green Farm is running durian sales events with live streams, and the shells from every session are sent to HIBSF instead of landfill.

Durian season is here! Every year, the season brings a mountain of empty durian shells that usually end up in landfill. This year we are collecting those shells and feeding them to our Black Soldier Fly larvae, which convert the waste into protein-rich larvae and nutrient-rich frass, keeping it out of landfill and reducing the methane and pollution that come with it.

We are collaborating with De Green Farm, who are currently holding durian sales events. In their live streams, the team peels fresh durians on camera, packs the flesh and sells it online to viewers in real time. After each session, the shells and organic waste are bagged up and delivered to our facility. Durian shells are bulky and slow to break down naturally, so turning them into valuable resources within days is a great example of what BSF recycling can do.
